Back to the Future

What comes to mind when you hear Beethoven? That old classic we all "know" the sound of. You might just have to rethink that after this concert.

About the concert

This is one of this year's most ingenious concerts, because this journey is quite simply a rare treat. Who will we all be after this concert?

You might have thought you knew what 18th- and 19th-century music sounds like, but your reality is about to change. For the better.

It's extraordinary when the old classics sound like modern composers, and the new works sound like the old warhorses. A journey through time you didn't know you needed.

Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was a German composer from Bonn who settled in Vienna. Completely deaf by 1818, he composed many masterpieces in his final decade. He wrote 9 symphonies, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, and the opera Fidelio. The crucial bridge between Classical and Romantic eras, he elevated instrumental music to high art. Widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in history, he profoundly influenced Schumann, Brahms, and generations of composers.
